The town of Carrboro has a program to lend money to businesses within the town. This is another example of government undertaking activities outside of what government should do. If a business can’t get a loan through normal channels that probably means they are not a good credit risk.
The Triangle Business Journal (October 16,2009) listed under Chapter 7 Bankruptcies a company by the name of The Original Ornament Inc. They listed assets of $42,400 and debts of $201,298 with the major creditor being (drum-roll please) the Town of Carrboro for $70,000 smackers! That was a smart loan.
Of course if you lend money to the news media like Carrboro did you might be able to keep a little thing like blowing $70,000 under wraps.
