Many of you may remember a couple of months ago that the Civitas Institute created an interactive “Balance the State Budget” tool for citizens to select from a menu of options of cost-saving measures to arrive at the then-budget deficit of $3.7 billion. The webpage was a hit with viewers, as it was one of our most viewed pages of the last year.
Well, if imitation is the highest form of flattery, Gov. Perdue’s office is paying us a high complement with their new website “Balance the Budget Challenge.” If only we would have included a cute puppy mascot!
The governor provides a menu of options to help balance the state budget – and strangely includes a few options that would increase spending. In particular, you can opt to give teachers a pay raise, or choose to increase corporate welfare payments and “marketing” funds for NC tourism and products.
The governor’s “challenge” no doubt offers some insights into the different options being considered by her budget team, and likely offers somewhat of a preview into what her budget recommendation will contain when it is unveiled this Thursday.
