A sluggish economy and endless press reports about the havoc Republican budgets would wreak on local school systems generated plenty of concern about layoffs in school systems across North Carolina. So what do preliminary school personnel figures show for Wake County Public Schools System (WCPSS), the state’s largest? In the last year, WCPSS did layoff a significant number of local and federal employees 464 and 458 respectively. However, WCPSS also added 1,114 new state-funded school employees, including 430 teachers. The bottom line: WCPSS actually added 192 new education jobs. Interestingly, the data also show federal and locally-funded school employees had the the greatest number of job losses – not those funded by state dollars.
The numbers reviewed here are from preliminary unvalidated data submitted by Local Education Agencies (LEAs) to the Department of Public Instruction(DPI). DPI is expected to release final personnel numbers shortly.
