You have probably heard about the 49 year-old woman who fell out of her daughter’s bunk bed in a UNC Chapel Hill dorm room last August. News reports said the woman hit her head on the floor and later died. According to UNC officials. the accident prompted about 500 students to request bed rails. (See: news article)
Now an autopsy report from Office of Chief Medical Examiner says the woman did not fall from a bunk bed, but most likely died from “blunt force injury of the head.” The mother most likely tripped over her daughter’s walker (the daughter is disabled) and hit her head on a dresser. The reassessment raises lots of interesting questions none of which we’ll address here but you wonder why they weren’t answered early on.
Suffice it to say, UNC’s announcement that it will likely move forward with plans to purchase bed rails for all dorm rooms at a cost of $250,000 — despite the autopsy report, is the biggest surprise of all.
I guess it’s only money.
