How many opportunities has the North Carolina General Assembly, controlled by Democrats, had to implement a comprehensive immigration policy and has instead, decided to ignore or quash any attempt at fixing a growing issue? So why have many Democratic candidates decided to jump on the “tough on immigration” bandwagon? Could it be perhaps because the majority of North Carolinians support tougher immigration standards?
Some Democratic candidates, including Margaret Dickson, Tony Foriest, and Dewey Hudson have even directly accused their Republican opponents of hiring illegal immigrants. As I mentioned in a recent blog post, David Redwine also suddenly supports “tough new fines for corporations caught knowingly hiring illegal immigrants.”
In the past, these same Democrats have opposed Arizona’s immigration reforms, E-Verify, and other legislative proposals to secure and maintain our borders while adamantly defended the DREAM Act and amnesty for illegal immigrants currently residing in America. Why would you attack Republican candidates for hiring illegal immigrants if your platform to date is, “Illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay and work in this country no matter the reason?” Why would they care if their opponents hired illegal immigrants given their position on the matter? To me, the hypocrisy is glaringly obvious. Are these candidates really whistling a new tune when it comes to immigration policy or are they just doing whatever it takes to get elected and then return to their “business as usual?”
I want to know what my candidates really stand for – not just what they’re willing to say to get elected.
