We hear through the grapevine that some people are citing our most recent online survey to say NC voters would like to grant drivers licenses to illegal immigrants. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
Online surveys aren’t meant to be scientific studies of public opinion, but rather ways of letting people express their views and engage in discussion.
Anyone interested in what NC voters really think about this should go to our most recent poll, in May. It not only reflects much more accurate views of voters’ views now, it includes what those opinions were ten years ago when we took our first poll.
Here’s the relevant question:
. What of the following benefits do you believe illegal immigrants should receive from North Carolina …
2005 | 2015 | |
45% | 39% | No benefits |
32% | 23% | Emergency Medical benefits |
5% | 9% | Educational benefits |
5% | 7% | Driver’s License |
6% | 14% | All Three |
2% | 2% | Medical and Educational |
2% | 2% | Medical and driver’s license |
* | 1% | Educational and driver’s license |
— | 2% | Other |
2% | 1% | Not sure |
— | * | Refused |
In other words, the real Civitas polls show NC voters consistently and strongly oppose granting drivers licenses to people who are here illegally. Don’t let anyone tell you different.
