North Carolina law requires sex offenders (but only those convicted or released after 1995) to be listed on a registry that is available to the public. You might be surprised to learn just how many sex offenders live near your home or workplace. For example, our office in Raleigh has 182 sex offenders living within a five mile radius.
Attorney General Roy Cooper has taken the registry a step further. You can now sign up for alerts delivered by telephone when a sex offender moves into your area.
So take the time and look up your address or the address of your child's school and find out who lives near your children or grandchildren. You may find a fellow like this sex offender recidivist near you.

What do we do to find out about the offenders who were convicted before 1995? Are we still at their mercy?
