Looks like Charlotte has a similar boondoggle on its hands:
The U.S. Whitewater Center defaulted on its loans again this year, an audit provided to the City of Charlotte shows.
Despite
measures taken to increase revenues, including charging for parking,
the center also had a shortfall of $2.1 million, more than last year's
$1.3 million.
Six local governments – Mecklenburg and
Gaston counties and the cities of Charlotte, Gastonia, Belmont and
Mount Holly – have agreed to contribute a maximum of $12 million to the
center over seven years.
Ah, more taxpayer money washed away in the false hope of "economic development." When will these governments learn they can't just create and subsidize these ridiculous ideas and think they are going to succeed. There's a reason these things aren't viable business models in the free market.
