State Representative Paul Stam and several other Republicans have introduced HB41 to give families a tax credit if they want to put their children in charter schools or private schools. The credit would be $1250 for each of two semesters per year. A married couple would have to make under $100,000 per year to qualify. There are other restrictions, such as, the child can’t have spent any time in a public school during the semester.
Steve MacDonald, NBCT says
This bill is not a tax credit, it is a voucher, and Rep Stam is on record as saying that the bill must be presented as a tax credit because vouchers do not sell well to the public. That is because vouchers take money away from public education.
