A Civitas Flash Poll shows Wilmington voters strongly (70%) against building a new baseball stadium. If you ask them if they support it if they have to pay higher taxes opposition goes up to 86%. But if the private sector builds a stadium support FOR the stadium goes to 81% in favor.
This appears to be another move by the City of Wilmington to, without the express approval of Wilmington voters, obligate the city to paying for a large construction project. They did this same maneuver when they built the Wilmington Convention Center.
Many local governments have stopped putting projects and borrowing up for votes preferring to go easier routes such as Certificates of Participation and other financing options. We will have to watch and see how this story goes.
