The state Senate passed SB265 on its second reading. It faces one more vote next week before going to the House. State employees would contribute to their health insurance and the measure would move the State Health Plan to the State Treasurer’s Office. Democratic Senator Martin Nesbitt said the higher premiums would invite a lawsuit. He said the state was going back on a promise to retirees. Nesbitt also said even with these changes the plan will collapse eventually if nothing else is done.

In the following link Republican Senator Tom Apodaca, the sponsor of the bill, countered the state was contributing much more…
Democrats complained the changes do nothing to attract younger families to the plan so they could prop it up. Apodaca said the Treasurer and an executive comittee would work on that as well as some wellness provisions to help smokers and those who are overweight.
