State Senators had their first look at a bill that would impose a one year moratorium on involuntary annexations. The Senate State and Local Government committee began discussion on SB27 which would stop any involuntary annexations under consideration around the state. Bill sponsor GOP Senator Andrew Brock said he has heard of several proposed annexations and was afraid of a “wild west” annexation rush. He said that started after Republicans won the majority in November because cities knew the Republicans were trying to stop cities from annexing communities in which people didn’t have a vote on it. Republican Senator Harris Blake and Democratic Senator Stan White said there should be consideration for cities that are already in the process of an annexation because of the cost. Blake said it should be taken on a case by case basis. While this would be just a moratorium Brock said there would be legislation coming to make permanent changes so annexations would be fair. The committee did not vote on the bill.
