In the race to replace Democratic Sen. Julia Boseman in New Hanover county, Republican nominee Thom Goolsby starts the race with a large lead over Democrat Jim Leutze according to a Civitas poll released this week.
Similar to the lead Bill Rabon enjoys in the neighboring 8th district, Goolsby is benefiting from having spent quite a bit of money to win his primary, thus boosting his standing among voters.
Goolsby is also remarkably well known among New Hanover county voters. 45% of voters have a favorable opinion of him while only 19% are unfavorable. 27% are neutral, but, only 10% of the voters have never heard of him. Having a 90% name identification this early in the race is uncommon, but not all that surprising given how active Goolsby has been as a lawyer and political figure in New Hanover county for many years.
