In the first Civitas Flash Poll of competitive legislative districts this year, Republican nominee Kathy Harrington is trouncing her Democratic rival Annette Carter 56%-28%.
This is the district of retiring Democratic Senator David Hoyle, who had been able to hold onto this overwhelmingly Republican district (R+10 on the NCPI) through his long service, personal connections in the county and the ability to out spend any Republican challenger.
With Hoyle’s retirement, this district appears almost certain to flip Republican.
Interestingly, one issue that Harrington pushed in her landslide primary victory was her opposition to the construction of the Garden Parkway as a toll road. While this brought about the scorn of some developers and some in the business community, voters agreed with Harrington’s position 64%-22%.
With a favorable name ID, a 2:1 lead to start and a solid Republican district in what is shaping up to be a very good year, go ahead an pencil in Kathy Harrington as the next senator from SD 43.
