The N&O offers some reaction to the introduction of the bill filed yesterday that would protect North Carolina citizens from the Obamacare mandate requiring all individuals to enroll or purchase some form of health insurance, and to prohibit legal punishment for those who don’t.
“They said this session was about jobs, not about fighting old ideological battles,” said Minority Leader Joe Hackney, D-Orange. “I guess we now have the answer to that.”

“This is designed to protect the vast majority of our citizens on what we believe is an unjust intrusion of government power,” said Rep. Paul Stam, a Wake Republican and one of the bill’s sponsors.
The bill would not only attempt to rebut the Obamacare mandate, but also serve to protect against any future state-level health care overhauls (like “Romneycare” in Massachusetts).
The “ideological battle” over individual liberty versus government control through the use of force and coercion is indeed “old,” but it is ongoing. Hackney should know that there is no expiration date on it.
As noted hereyesterday, North Carolinians have weighed in on this specific ideological battle, and by more than a 2 to 1 margin they agree with the terms included in the bill.
I have read all three versions of this preversion of justice.
I’m not a lawyer, but this does nothing to get me a discounted cash and carry health care.
This does nothing to allow me to continue to receive the benefits I earned by 21 years of honorable service to this nations armed service.
Fortunately President Eisenhower had the foresight to include Social Security in the plan for all veterans military retirement.
As soon as the State of North Carolina refuses to accept a single dollar from the US Government I’ll be happy to support this.
Until then our legislature is wasting our time and money.
