Today Sen. Richard Stevens (R-Wake) introduced legislation (SB 8) to remove the current cap on charter schools. North Carolina limits the number of charter schools to 100. The bill, co-sponsored by sixteen other senators (15 Republicans and 1 Democrat) only seeks removal of the current cap, confirming expectations that other issues of importance to charter school proponents (i.e., authorization and capital costs) will be addressed later in a larger bill.
