Rep. Verla Insko (D-Orange) has her eyes set on a new target: candy bars sold as fundraisers in North Carolina’s public schools. Citing the fat and calories found in the tasty treats, in committee today Rep. Insko stated that the goal of House Bill 900 was to “limit choices…as any good parent should.” Knowing that the bill probably doesn’t have the votes to pass into law, Insko and Democrat leaders stated that they were presenting the bill today simply for discussion, and stated that they hoped the program would be implemented in the future.
No one thinks that candy bars and other junk food are a healthy substitute for a meal. However, Rep. Insko’s statement that the state should “limit choices… as any good parent should” is indicative of how she views government: as a parent, and average citizens as the children. A very disturbing worldview indeed.
