Today, SB1112, “Modernization of the State ABC System,” was considered in the Senate Judiciary II Committee. The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Don Vaughan (D-Guilford), claimed that there is very little support for privatization, which is the most effective way to ensure profitability and efficiency.
A Civitas poll from February 2010 contends otherwise. The poll indicates that, by a 47%-37% margin, the people of North Carolina support privatization. In the Piedmont, where Senator Vaughan’s district is, the margin is 49%-38% in favor of privatization. Perhaps Senator Vaughan should say there is little support for keeping the system the way it is — broken and outdated.

Well isn’t that a magnanimous sounding bill title.
