North Carolina’s economic managers praised each other for their ability to consolidate more power into their hands and the hands of their corporate cronies at the expense of the rest of us.
At a Durham event to sign an economic partnership between North Carolina and China, (N.C. Commerce Secretary Keith) Crisco told the audience that he can count on Perdue to “take any call, any meeting to bring new jobs to North Carolina.”
“In baseball terms, she’s a closer,” Crisco told the group, which included more than 100 Chinese politicians and business leaders.
Then Perdue referred to Crisco and deputy Commerce Secretary Dale Carroll as the state’s “powerful jobs building Commerce team.”
Perdue’s last comment is revealing in that it at least acknowledges the power being wielded by the political elite in this state – a power they drain away from millions of North Carolina consumers. What these central planners are really referring to when talking about being a “closer” is the granting of privileges to certain politically-connected corporations. The result is a distortion of the allocation of scarce resources among entrepreneurs away from the preferences of consumers and towards the preferences of politicians and their cronies.
Does anyone else cringe at such displays of centralized power by the political elite?
