The veto threat by Gov Bev Perdue is more proof that some Democrats are not acting like adults about the fiscal mess that is state government. As papers are reporting, Perdue says she will veto this bill over a disagreement in some of the funds that are impacted. These cuts will cost no employee of state government their job, will not cancel any service or program and are mostly out of funds that have not been allocated or promised. This bill gives Perdue the power to make further cuts and savings without coming back to the legislature – something she asked for earlier. This is the easy part of fixing the budget mess.
For the last two years the legislature mostly ignored the looming crisis and refused to take steps to align government spending with revenues, as most North Carolina families and businesses have done. Now when the Republicans legislature starts to act, Perdue and her allies in the legislature again refuse to act like grown ups and acknowledge that there are real problems and real actions have to be taken.
For the time being Republicans in the state legislature seem to be acting like adults and not children. Hopefully politicians at the national level will also grow up – quickly!
