The misleadingly named Healthy Families and Workplaces Act – SB 534 received a rough welcome in the Senate Commerce Committee today. While the committee only heard from the bill's supporters, members of the committee made it clear that this bill would harm business. The bill would require all businesses in North Carolina with ten or more employees to give seven paid sick days per year.
Senator Tom Apodoca (R-Henderson) had the best line of the meeting when he said, "There is an illness going around and its not the swine flu. Its the anti-business flu."
Senator Eddie Goodall (R-Union) called the bill an unfunded mandate on business.
The bill was not voted on in today's meeting. The committee chairman, Senator RC Soles (D-Columbus) stated that the committee would hear the bill further at another time.
Employers need to take a hard look at this bill since it will land right on top of them.
