Thirteen. Certainly not anyone’s favorite number. However there is a plus side. It was the number of colonies that united to form this great nation. Thirteen also represents the number of states where opposition to common core standards has been discussed in the statehouse or a bill opposing the standards has been introduced. The states include: Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Missouri, Utah, Michigan, Kansas, Oklahoma, Florida, Colorado, South Carolina and South Dakota (Did you notice North Carolina is not listed as one of the pushback states?). There are reasons for that which we can discuss later.
Still, the point here is that opposition to the Common Core is growing. Our friends at Truth in American Education are doing a good job of tracking this brushfire.
You may remember 46 states signed on the Common Core Standards – frequently as a means of complying with requirements for receipt of Race-to-the-Top funds. Now that citizens and legislators are putting Common Core under a microscope, they don’t like what they see. They’re saying no to centralized education and all the costs that come with it.
