Sorry, I've just got to get this off my chest:
<begin rant>
I'm sorry, but I've got no sympathy whatsoever for these restaurant owners that are NOW coming out and complaining about the version of HB 2 that passed the NC House on Thursday.
My message to them: You had the opportunity to solve this "problem" on your own. Each and every one of you has been free to convert your establishment to non-smoking at any point in time. But no. Many of you were too chicken to go smoke-free voluntarily and asked for the government's help. Well, now you're getting it.
You could have held the line that it is up to you to set your own smoking policy and fought this over-reach of government from the beginning. Instead, you're going to get stuck with what you call an "unfair" law. Congratulations. You wanted a law, now you're going to get one.
Hopefully you've learned your lesson to not look to government to solve problems you can handle on your own. Why give up complete control of something just because you don't have the guts to tell a minority of your customers that they have to step outside to smoke.
Wait until the next time the government wants to come in and regulate your activities. I bet you won't be so welcoming.
