Virginia’s Gov. Bob McDonnell wants to wait to create a health insurance exchange until after the U.S. Supreme Court takes up the ObamaCare individual mandate. The court will hear arguments in March and make a likely ruling by summer 2012, around the same time as the exchange federal grant deadline.
McDonnell is quoted as saying, “Any major expense prior to the court decision is irresponsible and a waste of money.” He also dismissed the threat of federal action if the state misses exchange deadlines. Technically, states must have an operating exchange by Jan. 1, 2014 but so far, the federal government itself has missed and extended several of its own deadlines.
North Carolina should set a strong example for the nation and not implement an exchange unless it becomes absolutely necessary. Click here to read 10 reasons why the exchange is a bad policy for North Carolinians.
