A lot of people will be happy to know that the North Carolina Board of Elections is verifying the citizenship of some voters. Maybe there is hope and after the legislature passes legislation that will require all voters to provide a photo ID to vote we can move on to verify citizenship.
Georgia has a citizenship verification program that has been upheld by the US Justice Department.
In a letter dated February 22, 2010 to Board of Elections members and County elections directors, State Board of Elections staff reports that they have discovered 637 voters who have a “Legal Presence” indicator in the DMV record.
All 637 voters received a letter from the General Counsel of the State Board of Elections that included the voters registration date and date(s) they voted. These voters were asked to complete a form that would confirm their citizenship status and would remove them from the official voting rolls if they were not citizens.

I am curious as to the form sent out by the BOE confirming (or no) the citizenship status of the voters with “Legal Presence” on their DMV record. I would hope it is more than checking the Yes square on the “Are you a citizen of the United States of America”. This totally inadequate, if so.
I am trying to get our legislators to understand that photo ID is important for voting but HOW YOU QUALIFY FOR THE ID is the first order of business.
I am campaigning for legislation that requires a birth certificate or pass port in addition to the photo ID to vote. It will probably be a major battle, I ned all the help I can get. Thank you for all that you do for our state.

In order to get an ID for voter identification a person should have verification of birth (birth certificate) and verification of their current address. It also should not be possible for anyone to vote who cannot speak english. I have had people come in who could not speak any english and had someone to interpret for them. That is wrong.

I would like to tell you the answer to your headline “What is NC Waiting For”? We are waiting for a Voter ID w/picture put in place before the 2012 election. Older people have picture ID’s and if they don’t they can easily go to NCDL offices and easily get one.Remember how Obama shoved his Health Care down our throats? We can do the Voter ID the same way. Let’s go NC Legislature.
