State Senator Josh Stein (D-Wake) of Wake County doesn’t believe there is a need for a requirement to show a photo ID to vote. In fact, in this video (thanks to David DeGerolamo at NC Renegade), Mr. Stein explains that the only voter fraud in NC is perpetrated by voters who vote by mail – and most of those voters are Republicans.
Stein also states that “10 percent of North Carolinians don’t have ID right now.” No one really knows how many people do not have identification in North Carolina. This is a tactic of the liberal left – go ahead and make a claim even if it is not correct – if it’s eventually said enough maybe someone will believe it and repeat it.
We can hope that the state Senate will take a good long look at Georgia who enacted one of the strongest Voter Photo ID laws in the nation in 2007. Furthermore, as of December 2010, Georgia has provided less than 23,899 free voter ID cards and they spent far less than the liberal/progressive naysayers like to claim.
Georgia spent:
$842,000 2007 – 2008 Statewide outreach and education campaign (1 time cost) included:
- PSAs radio TV
- Direct mail
- Packages to government agencies
- Partnered with Atlanta Falcons to get the message out to the voters
$773,000 for Camera equipment for all county BOE offices (1 time cost – vast majority of this spent in 1 year).
Senator Stein also likes to say that voter photo ID is an obstacle to vote – that is certainly not the case with the Georgia voter photo ID. Again, from the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office:
“The 2008 elections were the largest in Georgia’s history, featuring record turnout among minority voters with the photo ID requirement in place. The figures below represent voter turnout statistics among Hispanic/Latino, African-American and White voters from the 2004 and 2008 General Elections.”
Voter Demographic | 2004 Total Number of Votes Cast | 2008 Total Number of Votes Cast | Percentage Increase in Votes Cast |
Hispanic/Latino | 18,000 | 43,000 | 140% |
African-American | 834,000 | 1.2 million | 42% |
White | 2.3 million | 2.5 million | 8% |
