Those of you wondering where the Wake County School Board might find an additional $2.6 million in budget savings, you might be interested in a piece I wrote in late April about Wake County Office of Central Services(CS). Since April, CS has absorbed nearly $20 million in cuts and the loss of about 70 full-time employees. However, there is good reason: CS is huge. Even with the reductions, CS employees number around 650.
Several Wake County School Board members are eyeing cuts in Senior Administrator positions. A Wake County employee listing from last fall (these numbers don’t reflect earlier reductions) lists 137 Senior Administrator positions, with an average salary of $72,495. Other positions which might also gain a second look include 34 Senior Directors ($99,308); 54 Directors ($87,808) and 55 Administrator positions ($62,586). Such numbers make it difficult to accept the need for teacher layoffs.
