Per the Greensboro News-Record, it appears as though another of North Carolina’s Alcohol Beverage Control Boards is in trouble. This time it’s Greensboro’s ABC Board General Manager Katie Alley that is accused of unethical actions including accepting gifts from liquor companies. Troubles in Greensboro come only months after controversy over exorbitant salaries exploded in New Hanover County. An exhaustive look at that story can be found here.
Privatizing the sale of liquor in North Carolina would cure the ethics ills of these local boards while sin taxes on alcohol would ensure revenues. It is time that North Carolina got out of the liquor business. A responsibly regulated private sector is a better option. After all, alcohol is a legal substance.

Privatize it. Please. And I don’t get the “conservative Christian” argument for keeping it in government hands, and I’m a Christian and a conservative. The government should not be in the alcohol business, just like it shouldn’t be in the gambling business.
