What a year 2018 has been! So much has happened since January 1, 2018. From the passage of three key amendments – voter ID, right to hunt and fish, and the 7% income tax cap – to the Atlantic Coast Pipeline ethics complaint Civitas filed against Gov. Cooper, it has been a year full of removing barriers to freedom and holding elected officials accountable.
Below is a countdown of the top five nccivitas.org articles from 2018. As you can see, it’s a diverse list, reflecting some of the most salient issues facing our state this past year.
We know that 2019 is going to be a busy year for those committed to defending liberty. Leaders on the left have already made it abundantly clear that they will reduce access to healthcare for the poorest North Carolinians through Medicaid expansion if given the opportunity. With the rising shortage of doctors – coupled with thousands of able-bodied working age adults placed on the Medicaid rolls – this expansion will hurt the neediest. They will also push for higher taxes and a freeze in school choice options for our state’s children.
So, as we reflect on the major policy victories of 2018, we must begin to prepare ourselves for the challenges and opportunities awaiting us in 2019.
There will be battles ahead and maintaining ground on the policy gains we’ve made won’t be easy. But North Carolina conservatives have proven time and again that we’re up to the task. The facts and stats are on our side. Civitas polling indicates that the majority of likely voters lean center-right when it comes to many public policy issues. These polls also serve to inform of us of areas where there’s still plenty of work to do. However, when we work together, we’re a force to be reckoned with.
Alongside of you, we at Civitas will continue to be vigilant and proactive, ensuring liberty remains at the fore of state policy in 2019. So Happy New Year, fellow conservative – let’s make 2019 the best year yet.
