At a US House hearing on immigration Tuesday, March 1, Rep. John Conyers (D-Michigan) claimed that the debate about the estimated 14 million illegal aliens in the United States is dividing black and Latino communities. However, one witness testifying, George Rodriguez, stated Mexican-Americans have nothing in common with people who have broken the law by coming to and remaining in our country illegally.
Rodriguez, the president of San Antonio, Texas Tea Party exclaimed that not distinguishing from legal Mexican-Americans from illegal aliens is “unfair and discriminatory,” adding, “We are born in this country and we honor this country.”
He noted one of the greatest challenges facing legal Mexican-Americans along the states bordering Mexico was the illegal aliens who came across the border who are willing to work for lower wages. Rodriguez further commented, “Mr. Conyers, with all due respect, one thing you said a few moments ago as far as abhorrence and the competition between people — let me tell you what is really abhorrent — that Hispanic Americans are classified in the same breath with illegal aliens,” Rodriguez said. “We are American citizens.”
I’m sure legal immigrants in North Carolina could share a similar story. Get the full story here.
