As legislation to remove the cap on charter schools movesw forward, charter school opponents continue to voice their objections to the bill. One of the most common complaints is that charter schools will leave minorities behind and the achievement gap between the races will only continue to widen.
This claim is false. There are charter schools that have been disproving such statements for years. One such school is Gaston College Prep (GCP). GCP has over 600 students and 87 percent of the students are African American. African American students at GCP have consistently bested their state counterparts on End-of-Grade and End of Course exams by considerable margins (See test results here) . In 2009, Newsweek magazine named Gaston College Prep one of the best high schools in the United States.
Anyone who is interested in learning how GCP succeeds where so many other schools fail should attend the KIPP Gaston College Prep student presentation on the subject. The event will be held on Tuesday March 8th at 11:30 in the legislative building auditorium.
