Capitalism turns luxuries into necessities. Socialism turns necessities into luxuries.
Mark Perry of AEI’s excellent Carpe Diem web site highlighted that quote earlier in the week and it bears repeating.
According to Perry, Andrew Carnegie gets credit for the first part. The second part was added later. By whom we don’t know.
Think about it….
When was the last time you heard of someone risking life and limb to flee capitalism for socialism?
George Zeller says
New Zealand is a great place to live… Many would consider “fleeing” there if they could.
Naturally Civitas has its own warped, narrow and shallow, definition of socialism.
Bob Luebke says
George-
New Zealand is a great place. It’s also not a country that practices socialism. It has more liberal social welfare policies but also has free markets.
George Zeller says
Exactly… neither is Venezuela or Cuba for that matter! Why throw the word around? Feeding unenlightened readers the fear that “liberal social welfare policies” will lead to “Socialism” Venezuela style?
Larry says
George,Venezuela and Cuba don’t have any free markets. If they did they would not be communists.
Scott says
The FACT is that Western Civilization is made up of Social Democracies (which are all Capitalist). The country that is the least civilized in the West is the United States.
Perhaps Bob could use his sharp mind to tell the truth, instead of using fear propaganda to earn a paycheck from his masters!
