Hans von Spakovsky, an expert on elections, at CLC this morning demolished myths about elections. Election fraud is real. Voter ID laws don’t discourage voting; in fact, the opposite is true. Recent elections in state with voter ID laws have had record turnouts.
Sadly, he said, North Carolina backed down from its own reforms. “In an unfortunate act of political cowardice, the legislature gutted the voter ID law,” he said.
Many claims are flat-out bogus. He checked on voters who had claimed they were unable to vote. But elections records showed they had voted plenty of times.
He told of officials going to a naturalization ceremony to offer new citizens a chance to register. Turns out these new citizens had already been voting — illegally.
Reformers can win, he said. But it takes courage.
