More than a year after the Democrats on the State Board of Elections ended an investigation into the Governor’s campaign, the Democratic Chairman of the State Board of Elections, Larry Leake, says he regrets his vote to end the investigation. The Democrats on the Board chose not to hold a hearing or question witnesses under oath. Leake’s regrets come after three people connected
to the Governor’s campaign face charges stemming from the investigation Leake and his Democratic colleagues failed to perform.
The meeting in Asheville in August of 2010 was contentious and Chairman Leake was aggressive in defending himself and the Board to then Chairman of the Republican Party, Tom Fetzer. Fetzer described the State Board of Elections actions as a whitewash and called for Leake and Gary Bartlett, executive director of the elections board, to resign their positions.
