Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) are sweeping the nation. The above map from a post by Adam Peshek of the Foundation for Excellence in Education. It shows 22 states pursuing or considering ESAs in 2015.
Currently only two states Arizona and Florida have ESA programs. ESAs take a percentage of the funds that otherwise would have normally been spent on educating a child in the public schools and places the money in an account that is controlled by parents. The money can be used toward educational expenses or to help parents customize their child’s education. ESAs are especially beneficial to children with special needs. becuase the funds can be used for therapy or other educational expenses.
A quick glance at the map reveals North Carolina as the only Southern state where an ESA bill has not been introduced. Hopefully that will change soon.
