Earlier today Lt. Gov. Dan Forest issued a video in which he responds to the Department of Public Instruction’s response to the questions he submitted regarding the implementation of Common Core Standards in North Carolina.
If you remember in July, Forest sent Superintendent June Atkinson 67 questions about Common Core. DPI responded with a big data dump that averaged about 597 pages per question. If you take that long to answer a question, my guess is you either don’t know the answer or are hiding something.
If you’re mad, that makes two of us. I think the response is dismissive and disrespectful. Still, I am glad to hear the Lieutenant Governor is sending copies of the DPI reply to every member of the General Assembly, all 115 school superintendents, all elected County Commissioners and local school board members statewide.
I don’t really have an opinion on the goodness or badness of common core but suggesting that the LG’s questions were actually questions – stretches credulity. The LG sent a bunch of “Stop Common Core” propaganda and asked the superintendent to provide meeting notes and meeting minutes and all communications about myriad topics – many of which are barely connected if at all to common core. The LG’s questions are not fair-minded and reasonable they are disrespectful and for the most part meaningless. The LG disagrees with common core, accepting RttT money, longitudinal data system, and a whole host of other things. Questioning all of the work done by June, DPI, the SBE, and many others that he disagrees with results in exactly nothing. We get it, everything done before LGF is wrong and never made sense. Then bring some proposals before the State Board and forward some legislation instead of grandstanding.
Civitas Board Chairman Bob Luddy is also Chair of the Board of Franklin Academy Charter School. Franklin Academy incorporated common core in the middle school 2 years ago. How are those students doing? Have you interviewed the principals there? How do those students compare with Thales Academy students?
What a waste! The LG should be ashamed.
I am mad too, but for a different reason. The Lt Gov is grandstanding and seeking publicity for his campaign for Governor in 2020. He is wasting public servants’ time and should be doing his own homework.
