“We have people who are not from the area, don’t share our values, who are the majority on the school board,” Meeker said during the meeting. School board members “are taking steps to have schools that have the majority of well-to-do people in one set of schools and not as well-to-do people and minorities in another set of schools.” Raleigh Mayor, Charles Meeker (See article)
Meeker is spearheading efforts to sue the school board for dropping its diversity policy. He’s dissing school board members for not being locals, not sharing his values and not looking at social problems through the prism of race and income. Can you think of a better guy to talk about the importance of tolerance and diversity?
Brian Balfour says
Does the Mayor have the same contempt for illegal immigrants who are “not from the area” and don’t “share our values”?
Robert McMichael says
Mr. Meeker should recuse himself from this debate, at least from his position as mayor. He has a clear conflict of interest on this issue given his wife’s position on the School Board and her disagreement with the plan. He is welcome to his personal opinion on the matter. Using his mayoral post to advocate for his wife’s position on a matter outside the jurisdiction of the City is simply an arrogant abuse of power.
