The News and Observer is reporting that Dana Cope, former head of the State Employees Association of North Carolina will enter a plea agreement this morning in Wake County District Court. Cope is charged with embezzling nearly half a million dollars from SEANC funds to pay for such things as landscaping at his home, flight lessons, home furnishings and plastic surgery.
Cope is facing 2 class C Felonies. Each carries a penalty of 3 ½ to 7 ½ years in prison.
Despicable is the best word to describe Cope’s actions. He violated the trust of the members he was charged with serving. Let’s hope the plea agreement sends the right message and this doesn’t end as just another sordid tale about union money and crime.
