Last Monday, the City of Charlotte passed a controversial ordinance that purports to provide special protections to transgender individuals in their choice of bathroom accommodations. In response, the North Carolina General Assembly has considered calling a special session of the legislature to deal with the issue. Local news outlet ABC11 reached out to the Civitas Institute Center for Law and Freedom (CLF) for commentary on the issue:
“I do think it’s worth it,” said Elliot Engstrom, lead counsel at the Civitas Institute’s Center for Law and Freedom. “I’m not even sure the city of Charlotte has the authority to do this, anyways.”
Engstrom echoes sentiments Moore shared in a statement after the city council’s vote. It read in part, “This ordinance is impossible to regulate as intended, and creates undue regulatory burdens on private businesses.”
