In a debate over class-size legislation, one NC legislator made a rather odd reference:
When North Carolina lawmakers passed a bill last year that would make smaller classroom sizes a must – just about everyone agreed it was a good idea.
But then the complaints started coming in saying schools simply didn’t have the money to make that happen without making serious cuts. And the debate got dicey.
One Democratic lawmaker said this is a lose-lose scenario.
“In Star Trek lore, there is a famous test called the Kobayashi Maru, which is a test that’s designed that you can’t win,” said Rep. Darren Jackson.
Star Trek? The reference called to mind the winner of our 2009 Bad Bill of the Week tournament: a bill to use $1.7 million of taxpayer dollars to finance a “Star Fleet Academy” at North Carolina A&T – which would be a research building modeled after the fictional command center from the Star Trek TV series and movies.
