Just last week, I blogged about Chiquita’s decision to cut jobs in spite of receiving millions of dollars in state and local government corporate welfare. On a similar note, many of you will likely recall a major corporate welfare deal struck 5 years ago here in NC, in which the Fayetteville Goodyear plant would receive a big chunk of a $60 million package of taxpayer goodies.
The Fay-O reports today, however, some troubling news for that very same plant:
The Fayetteville Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. plant is shut down this week because of what plant officials have attributed to sluggish economic conditions….
Evans said there has been no discussion of the plant having to shut down for a second time this year.
“We’re keeping our fingers crossed,” Jackson said, “so we don’t have to take any more (furlough days) the rest of the year.”
The current shutdown had been anticipated.
Last month, Evans said there had been some discussion about taking days out of the production cycle if the economy failed to improve.
In spite of the hardworking taxpayers of North Carolina adding millions to the bottom line of the Fayetteville plant, they are still having to shut down for a week (and maybe more) because of their inability to generate sufficient revenue for the Goodyear corporation.
How many genuinely profitable, wealth-creating businesses were never created or forced to downsize because of the draconian tax rates the state imposes on non-privileged companies in order to prop up our state’s crony capitalism boondoggle? How many sustainable jobs destroyed or never created?
North Carolina needs to put an end to this corrupt, immoral political power grab and create an environment whereby all businesses play by the same rules.
