Things are worse than you think. That’s one of the messages Arthur Brooks’ leaves readers in an insightful article in today’s Wall Street Journal (subscription required, for a shorter version of this article ) Arthur Brooks of the American Enterprise Institute lays out a compelling case why he believes America already IS a European type social democracy. Brooks points to three reasons for America’s transformation: 1) the unflagging dedication of the left; 2) widespread corporate cronyism, and 3) the general inattention of citizens to issues of public policy.
Is there hope? According to Brooks, yest. The ethical populism of groups like the Tea Parties – and even the Occupy Wall Street movement can help spur reform, but only if they can become permanent parts of the landscape. Translation? We all need to get involved.
Arthur Brooks is one of the most clear-headed and influential voices on the defense of freedom and the morality of American Capitalism. He’s defines the biggest battles facing our country and what we can do about them in highly-acclaimed books The Battle and The Road to Freedom.
