This morning’s meeting of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Education provided a preview of what topic will likely dominate discussions when legislators return next week: budget cutting. Senate members reviewed 5 percent budget reduction scenarios for K-12 public education, community colleges and the UNC System. Some of the proposals sure to garner the most attention include:
K-12 Public Education
LEAs – $133 million reduction
Dropout Prevention Grants – $13 million reduction
Dept. of Public Instruction – $9 million in program and personnel cuts
Community Colleges
Curriculum Tuition – $8 increase
Community College System Office – $1.1 million in reductions
UNC System
Management Flexibility – $124 million in reductions
Legis. Tuition Grant – 5 percent reduction in the average size of LTG ($1,850)
All told, the Senate proposal — which is surely likely to change — included reductions of $340 million for K-12 public education; $36 million for Community Colleges and $133 million for the UNC System.
