A quick look at election results shows that it was not a great night for NC House of Representatives incumbents – of either party. My rundown shows the following incumbents lost:
- District 47 Sutton (D)
- District 60 Jones (D)
- District 99 Mackey (D)
- District 108 Neumann (R) — ran for Senate 43 and finished a distant 2nd
- District 110 Floyd (R)
- District 115 Goforth (D)
- Senate 9 Boseman (D) – ran for judge and came in 3rd
While 7 (5 running for reelection) may not seem huge, remember that there was a large number of seats this year that had no incumbent running. Also if you look at how many legislative candidates were held to the low 60% range, and lower, you have to assume that there was an anti-incumbent mood. Incumbents up and down the election chain tend to get reelected.
Another indicator was the low reelection percentage for incumbent congressmen. Coble (R), Kissell (D), McHenry (R) and Shuler (D) were all held in the low 60’s.
The other factor pointing to ant=incumbent is that it appears a number of sitting county commissioners across the state were defeated in primaries.
Hope to have a full report on all of this soon at www.nccivitas.org.
