The State Board of Education will vote today on whether to approve a new 10-point grading scale for North Carolina students. The scale has been much in the news lately and has baffled more than a few parents and teachers. It’s being sold as a way to level the playing field for North Carolina students applying for college and competing with students from states that have a 10-point grading system. That’s the PR we’re hearing. I ask: will lowering the passing grade a full 10 points (from 70 to 60 ) better prepare students for post-secondary education and work or to be globally engaged and productive citizens?
