The April issue focuses on the Civitas response to the coronavirus. One of our main points is to save taxpayer dollars in the state budget where possible. Future calls for tax increases trying to cover for budget pitfalls will only serve to cripple a state already facing potentially high unemployment and economic hardship. Civitas has also sounded the alarm in government overreach during the new state-issued lockdown implemented to flatten the curve as to not overburden the state’s hospital system. Wake County tried to suspend pistol permits and a few counties on the North Carolina coast banned non-resident property owners from accessing their homes or condos.
Dallas Woodhouse contributed an article about the abuse of local power in the Outer Banks. There is a lot of coronavirus content in this issue and Civitas will continue to call for greater transparency in state government, particularly at a time where governors and other lawmakers have unprecedented power to issue emergency orders and decrees.
