Below is a statement from Civitas President and CEO Donald Bryson in response to the recent General Assembly override of Gov. Cooper’s veto of the newly written voter ID bill:
“Gov. Cooper’s veto and the reasoning for his veto were a slap in the face to the voters of North Carolina. Gov. Cooper did not make arguments against the merits of Senate Bill 824 – Implementation of Voter ID Const. Amendment.
Instead, he chose to argue about the existence of a voter ID requirement altogether, which the state of North Carolina is now constitutionally obligated to have. The governor’s rhetoric calls into question how much he values and will continue to support the state constitution in his capacity as chief executive of the state.
With the state House’s veto override vote today and the Senate’s vote yesterday, the will of North Carolina’s electorate has been put into action, despite the Governor’s childish behavior.”
