The laws of economics, much like gravity, are not subject to a vote. Nor do they change based upon popular opinion.
Unfortunately, the sponsors of HB 1046, Constitutional Amendment [to] Up the Minimum Wage, need to be reminded of this.
Reps. Carla Cunningham (D-Mecklenburg), Graig Meyer (D-Orange), Bobbie Richardson (D-Nash) and Jean Farmer-Butterfield (D-Wilson) sponsored this bill that would place on the ballot this fall a constitutional amendment to change the state constitution to include a $9 an hour statewide minimum wage. Moreover, this minimum wage would increase automatically every year at a rate equal to annual inflation.
Minimum wage laws not only have no place in a free society and hurt the very people they are supposedly set up to help, they also have a very ugly history.
Minimum wage laws are an infringement on freedom. In a free society, people would have a right to engage in work arrangements free from government coercion and threats. The minimum wage, however, criminalizes voluntary agreements between employer and employee if the agreed-upon wage happens to be below the amount arbitrarily chosen by the political class.
Furthermore, basic supply and demand tells us that the higher the price of a good, the less of that good will be demanded, other things being equal. In this case, if the “price” of low-skilled labor (i.e. wages) is artificially raised, there will be fewer willing buyers of low-skilled workers (employers). The result: higher unemployment among low-skilled workers.
Empirical studies are not needed to confirm this, nor can they refute this. It is simply logic. No amount of wishful thinking or government fiats will change it.
Lastly, consider the ugly history of the minimum wage. This Foundation for Economic Education article points to academic literature that highlights how early minimum wage advocacy was tied in with the racist eugenics movement.
These days, you can count on media talking heads and countless politicians to proclaim how wonderful the minimum wage is for the poor. Wage floors will improve the standard of living, they say. But back in 1912, they knew better — minimum wages exclude workers — and they favored them precisely because such wage floors drive people out of the job market. People without jobs cannot prosper and are thereby discouraged from reproducing. Minimum wages were designed specifically to purify the demographic landscape of racial inferiors and to keep women at the margins of society. (emphasis added)
Economist Thomas Sowell also points out how the minimum wage has been used to keep minorities and immigrants from accessing jobs in several nations across the world for generations. Such a sordid history has lead economist Walter Williams to label the minimum wage as “one of the most effective tools in the arsenal of racists everywhere in the world.”
Because minimum wage laws criminalize peaceful, voluntary labor agreements, ultimately hurt low-skilled people the most, and have an ugly history rooted in racism, HB 1046 is this week’s Bad Bill of the Week.
Pinto says
Well, well, well! We can add minimum wage to other racist left-wing contrivances intended to keep black people down, I guess. Another one of those contrivances? The marriage license:
http://blog.tenthamendmentcenter.com/2016/04/alabama-house-committee-passes-bill-eliminating-government-marriage-licensing/
“In fact, state marriage licenses were used as a way to prevent interracial marriages.”
Logically, minimum wage and marriage licensing laws both ought to be abolished for very much the same reasons. While we’re at it, several other forms of licensing and government regulation need to be scrapped too, but these two bits of government overreach are definitely good places to start.

Brian Balfour
A major problem in America is the huge gap of income inequality which continues to widen. With the decline of labor union power the middle class is shrinking. Slaves had jobs but workers need a living wage. It is in the best interest of corporate America to have government regulate not just a minimum wage but a living wage close to or above what Bernie is suggesting. Workers with money from a living wage job, pay rent, buy groceries, pay taxes, go to dinner, take vacations, buy clothing, buy gifts, donate to charities and don’t require government assistance.
There are three choice , Require union representation which will benefit workers the most, increase the social safety net to allow workers to just live off the government requiring businesses to pay more increasing the standard of live for those who work or have government regulate wages to a living wage.
Capitalism or free market economics should be required by government to serve the interest of society or society will reject Capitalism. Let labor have an equal seat at the table of free market prosperity.

Restaurant owners have to be a hardy and resilient breed. Although their failure rate isn’t the 90 percent of urban myth, it’s a business that doesn’t permit many mistakes. Like any startup, a restaurant can take time to become profitable and pay the owner an adequate salary. Although that salary will vary with the restaurant’s sales volume, industry surveys can provide a reasonable average

Industry Survey
Online restaurant-industry magazine StarChefs performs a salary survey each calendar year, recording the previous year’s compensation figures. The 2011 survey, reporting 2010 salaries, reported an average income of $79,222 per year for restaurant chef/owners. This was higher than the salary of employee executive chefs, at $74,891, and chefs de cuisine, at $55,120 per year. However, it was down from the figures reported in prior surveys. Chef/owners had earned an average of $85,178 in 2008 and $85,685 in 2009.
Salary vs. Profitability
This decline in owner income reflects the difficulty of balancing the business’ needs against its owner’s. A survey performed by industry website Restaurant Owner.com found that its members required 18 months to become profitable on the average, and that their profits averaged 6.5 percent. That means keeping just $6,500 of every $100,000 in revenues. These are thin margins, and can easily be obliterated by an unwary owner drawing too much salary from the business.

Time Commitment
A restaurateur’s income, even in a profitable restaurant, isn’t usually lavish when the time commitment is considered. The restaurant lifestyle requires long hours and can be punishingly hard on relationships and family life. A 2005 study performed by researchers from Cornell University found that one key reason for restaurants to fail, and owners to leave the business, was the impact of those hours on family life. They simply reached a point where the income wasn’t adequate to compensate for the time investment.
Outlook
The Cornell report did reveal some grounds for optimism. It categorically refuted the impression that most restaurants fail in the first year. The actual failure rate was 26.2 percent — still high, but less intimidating. The study also found that capitalization is not always a factor, with many successful restaurants opening on $100,000 or less. Their study of failed and successful owners concluded that an abiding passion for the business, an adequate degree of planning and selection of a suitable location were potent factors in a restaurant’s success.

Dan Joseph | January 21, 2016 12:28pm ET
All Gimmedats.
While the left has been bending over backwards to blame the recent water crisis in Flint, Michigan solely on Republican Governor Rick Snyder and absolve local leaders and the Obama Administration’s EPA from responsibility for the catastrophe, it might be instructive to examine the past actions of some of the individuals who currently serve on the all-Democrat Flint City Council.
Apparently, some of their backgrounds are usual for those elected to public office.
Wantwaz Davis, elected to the council in 2013, served 19 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in 1991. The conviction was never publicly reported during Davis’s campaign.
His victim, Kenneth S. Morris, 27, died after being shot three times — once each in the hip, abdomen and mouth, according to The Flint Journal archives.
Councilman Eric Mays pleaded guilty to felonious assault in 1987 and served a year of probation. Mays said a man had been threatening his life before Mays threatened him with a gun.
Two other members of the council filed for bankruptcy prior to being elected to office.
Councilwoman Jackie Poplar filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy in federal bankruptcy court, a year before first being elected to the City Council. She repaid nearly $21,000 to her creditors over six years. Poplar claimed that the debt was primarily a result of expenditures following her mother’s death and was largely due to funeral expenses.
Councilwoman Monica Galloway, elected in 2013, and her husband, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 1999, according to federal court records.
There is no law that prohibits convicted murderers or those convicted of assault from serving on the Flint City Council. However, Michigan state law does ban felons convicted of fraud from serving in public office.
Of course, the personal problems that these current members of the council have dealt with does not necessarily mean that they cannot serve effectively and in ways that benefit their constituents. But, given the myriad of major financial–and now environmental–problems that the city has faced over the last decade, perhaps voters would be wise to take a closer look into the backgrounds of those who are seeking local office in Flint.

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded—here and there, now and then—are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.

Justice is supposed to be blind, but apparently it can find its checkbook.
Even though the Justice Department is supposed to be impartially investigating Hillary Clinton for mishandling classified data, their interest in Clinton extends to making sure she wins the election.
The Washington Free Beacon reports:
Hillary Clinton has received nearly $75,000 in political contributions from employees at the Department of Justice, the agency that would decide whether or not to act if the FBI recommended charges against Clinton or her aides following its investigation into her private email server.
Justice Department employees have given Clinton far more money than her rivals, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) and Donald Trump, according to a review of federal campaign contributions for the 2016 presidential cycle.
Clinton collected $73,437 from individuals who listed the “Department of Justice” as their employer. Twelve of the 228 contributions were for $2,700, the maximum individual amount allowed by law.
In what is almost certainly a complete coincidence, the Justice Department’s support for Clinton has grown in direct proportion to its involvement in investigating her.
“The fundraising haul marks a dramatic increase over Clinton’s unsuccessful presidential run in 2008, when she took in 23 contributions totaling $15,930 from employees at the agency, according to data compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics,” The Free Beacon reports.

Lying Lonnie,
Here is someone who has been living in you and Bernie’s commie heaven.Cuban, Venezuelan immigrants wrestle with Bernie Sanders’ brand of socialism
By Amanda Sakuma
ORLANDO, Fla. – Alejandra Chacon’s family had heard promises of a “political revolution” before, but they weren’t willing to stick around long enough to see how it played out.
They bolted from Venezuela when Alejandra was a young girl. And like many other Venezuelans who relocated to Florida, along with their Cuban-American neighbors, hearing a U.S. presidential candidate press for revolutionary change conjures uncomfortable memories of the conditions they once fled.
If under any other circumstance Chacon’s family would be drawn to Bernie Sanders’ message, for now, they’re taking a pause.
“It’s hard for us. We’re coming from a country where people are running away from socialism, and then for it to be here?” Chacon, 22, said.
Over dinner, in coffee shops and around the community, Chacon says the topic of Sanders’ political leanings comes up frequently with her family and others members of the growing Venezuelan community in central Florida. If this presidential election cycle has taught them anything, it’s the difficulty of overcoming a deeply personal association with a message of “revolution” coming from a self-described Democratic socialist.
“I understand that it’s a different kind of politics,” Chacon said. “I don’t think Bernie would actually change the entire country to socialism. But we talk about it a lot.”
For decades Florida has been a haven for exiles who fled the communist regime led by the Castro brothers in Cuba. In recent years a steady population of Venezuelans has resettled here too, escaping the fallout from the late socialist President Hugo Chavez, who came into power in 1999.
Their past experiences, coupled with an unfamiliarity with Sanders’ candidacy, poses obstacles in the Vermont senator’s ability to engage a crucial swing state’s burgeoning Hispanic population. Hillary Clinton is building on a well-known and well-received brand. In many ways, Sanders is starting at zero.
The question of his brand of socialism, and the underlying question of his electability, has been raised repeatedly over the last several months. Confronted with making the distinction during a town hall hosted by MSNBC in Nevada, Sanders was readily game to describe why Hispanic families should not be fearful of his policies.
“When I talk about Democratic socialist, I’m not looking at Venezuela. I’m not looking at Cuba. I’m looking at countries like Denmark and Sweden,” Sanders said. “And you know what goes on in those countries? All of the kids who have the ability and desire go to college. And you know how much it costs? It is free.”
He was pressed anew last week during a debate hosted by Univision, where moderators unearthed a 30-year-old clip showing Sanders praising Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. Standing before a heavily Hispanic crowd in Miami, a stronghold of Cuban-Americans, Sanders had to walk a fine line – standing by his previous comments while explaining how he had applauded Cuba’s universal health care and educational systems.
The current Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro entered the fray this week, praising Sanders at an event in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, that commemorated “Anti-Imperialism Day.”
Sanders “is an emerging candidate with a renovating and revolutionary message,” Maduro said on Wednesday. “He is the son of Jew immigrants from New York and was raised in Brooklyn.”
Much of the response to Sanders’ candidacy has broken down along generational lines, not unlike the response to the normalization of relations between the U.S. and Cuba. The association is especially difficult for older generations who either lived through dictatorial regimes or have grown fearful of what they’ve seen in their home countries from afar.
“I came here 26 years ago, because at that time it was the first sense that something is going to be bad,” said Naloy Zapata, 62, who now lives in Orlando. “So I got out right away.”
Adding to the unease is the fact that Floridians are still getting to know Sanders. This week he visited Florida for this first time in his presidential campaign. His rally in Miami marked 10 months into his White House bid and only one week ahead of the state’s primary.
According to the latest NBC News/Marist/WSJ poll out on Sunday, Sanders is trailing Clinton by 27 points in Florida, 61 percent to 34 percent. For Sanders supporters, the issue boils down to time – they need more of it to correct wrong assumptions and teach people about their candidate.
“People tend to think of the negative examples with socialism,” said Anna Garcia, 29, a Sanders supporter. “I think we have to just teach people the positive.”

Bernie Sanders’s praise for communist Cuba just became an issue. But do people even care anymore?
This is a Washington Post article, hardly a right wing source.
Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders speaks at the Univision-Washington Post Democratic presidential debate at Miami-Dade College on March 9 in Miami. (Wilfredo Lee/AP)
On Tuesday night in Miami, the Bernie Sanders who once boasted of his status as a “radical” met up with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), the formidable major-party presidential candidate.
After the debate’s organizers aired a three-decades-old clip of Sanders praising Fidel Castro, the communist Cuban dictator who came to power in the 1950s, some really might have expected trouble. In response, Sanders tried to remain true to his socialist principles in praising Cuba’s universal health care and education systems, but he made mention of Cuba’s authoritarian, undemocratic government.
Pinto says
Nice straw man, Lonnie, but I never assumed that “Cuba and Venezuela were models of freedom, justice and Liberty” before they went Commie. Like Tsarist Russia before Lenin and the Roman Republic before Caesar, it’s not as if everything was going along swimmingly before the Commies and socialists and mob-rule despots came along to make everything far worse. The reason I’m pointing to Venezuela in particular as an example of a place that followed your fool ideology is that (A) these are current events and (B) among the “solutions” the government kept trying to apply the people’s problems was raising the minimum wage (a lot each time, and a whole lot of times) and redistributing stuff from all those heartless-rapacious-greedy-capitalist-plutocrat-running-dog-paper-tiger-whatchamajiggers on whom they kept trying to pin the blame for all their economic problems just like you.
Also, (C) it wasn’t so very long ago that you historically illiterate leftards were praising Venezuela for these economic policies… just three years ago, in fact:
https://mises.org/library/reflections-venezuela%E2%80%99s-economic-miracle
If he (so far) lacks the decency to admit he was mistaken, Commie booster David Sirota at least has demonstrated his realization that he was wrong by going into hiding and blocking people from asking him about his article on the internet.
Besides, the Carl’s Junior, McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Berkeley, and University of Oregon examples are all likewise fairly current events, and they’re a whole lot closer to home… and you have no answer to the factual proof each of these examples provides that raising the minimum wage only kills jobs and plunges more people into poverty, and therefore is a bad idea just as Brian Balfour’s article says. That you keep trying to push these policies after they’ve repeatedly demonstrated themselves to be abject failures just proves that you don’t care about the poor; you’re just exploiting them for nefarious purposes the way you keep accusing your enemies of doing.
The solution to poverty is not more government control and regulation and price-fixing, but less government, less regulation, less price-fixing, and less of pretty much everything you leftards want. Capitalism has consistently worked everywhere it’s been tried, warts and all; socialism in all its forms has consistently been an abject failure except where, as in Venezuela, its very purpose was to keep people poor and uneducated and enslaved to a tyrannical and totalitarian government.

Yep, the clarity of realizing just how screwed you are under socialism is quite some benefit… for those who haven’t figured it out already. If you still have a job, I’d suggest you start updating your resume for the day you get the “benefit” of spending a lot more time with your family… watching them scrape for any employment they can find just to keep a roof over their heads, the same way you’ll be doing. The only benefit you can safely expect not to get is that “more money” one. As your employers have already pointed out, they don’t have a golden pot of money lying around for you; and as Carl’s Junior, McDonald’s, and Wendy’s have already demonstrated, some of them will doubtless find it greatly to their advantage to replace you with a machine that doesn’t get overtime pay, doesn’t agitate for more minimum wage hikes, and doesn’t sabotage the company’s product out of socialistic spite for the capitalist customer.

Castro tried to reach a deal with Nixion for Universal healthcare, quality public education and land reform but Nixon informed him what he wanted was Communism and drove him to go to the USSR.
Larry says
Hate to break it to you Lonnie,Batista was not a capitalist. But,I do realize I’am wasting my breath.
Lonnie says
Larry
Batista, was a right wing puppet, like those Art Pope and Duke Energy installs in political power.
Batista’s puppeteers were the American Mob and United Fruit.
Larry says
Hey Lonnie,
The mob is left wing like you.Duke was a big Ostupid supporter. There is that lack of education again. You really need to watch or read some news that will actually report something.Duke loved Ostupid because that was one thing the liar didn’t lie about. He said your energy bill would skyrocket. He also said he needed to make your energy prices go up to save you from global warming. Now,anybody with a brain as big as a BB knows global warming in a hoax to make Al Gore and some solar crooks rich.Of course you not being one of the top Commies all you got out of it is higher power bills.
Larry says
Unlike Georgie boy,Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams are two of the smartest gentlemen in this country.
Larry says
Hey Lonnie,
You say Castro tried to reach a deal with Nixion,I know who Nixon was but Nixion escapes me.What was the deal to be,Nixon was supposed to give the Cubans money for healthcare, education, and land. That would have made them Gimmedats. You and Bernie just love murdering dictators don’t you Lonnie? You are a piece of work. You love murdering dictators and Muslims and then tells us how moral and caring you Commies are.
Larry says
Hey Lonnie,
I forgot to ask,did Castro go by the Golden Rule when he was killing all those people.
Larry says
Hey Lonnie,
Bernie says free college and Hillary says free pre-school.Which one is going to come out with free cars.Gimmedats already get free housing, food, phones, and pretty much everything but cars.Maybe the one promising free cars will win it all. What color would you like?I guess you need 4 wheel drive up there in Blowing Rock and Boone.I think you will have to vote twice to get 4 wheel drive.Maybe you can go to the graveyard and get a few names to vote. You don’t need any I.D. you know.

Now the Commie running the VA is comparing life-saving health care to an amusement park… seriously!

Lonnie, someday when you’re waiting in line the way millions already are in Venezuela (and Cuba) for your beloved Commie government to give you some desperately needed life-saving medicine or an organ transplant or surgery for your cancer before it metastasizes, remember that you did this to yourself. We warned you this would happen, and you heard it here today: what the Commies in charge of the VA are doing to those poor veterans for whom they’re supposed to be caring right now, Commies will likewise one day do to you. What you’ve sowed, you shall reap, you cruel and heartless parasite.
