Conservatives must learn to show Americans the compassion underlying the ideas and policies of the freedom agenda, Arthur Brooks, president of the American Enterprise Institute, told a gathering of at least 60 people Wednesday at an event in Charlotte, sponsored by Civitas. Brooks was speaking about his New York Times bestseller The Conservative Heart, which gives directions for how to make the case for your conservative beliefs from a compassionate viewpoint.

Conservatives are just not that good at acting, conservatives are people who boo the “Golden Rule” and cheered presidential candidates campaign promises of torture and human rights abuse if elected. These are people who expect 35% of American families (1 in 4 children ) to live in grinding poverty so they can buy a burger for $0.50 less. Conservatives oppose giving medical treatment to the poor when they cannot afford insurance.
