Please take a moment to thank Governor McCrory for signing Voter ID into law. Let him know that you are part of the overwhelming majority (more than 70 percent) of North Carolina’s voters who support his efforts to secure our state’s elections.
Here is a copy of the letter to Governor McCrory:
Dear Governor McCrory,
I write today to thank you for signing House Bill 589 VIVA/Election Reform.
I supported the VOTER ID provisions and the other reforms included in HB 589 and believe that they will help change an old and outdated system that had become confusing and dysfunctional. Working with the legislature, you have moved our great state in a positive direction and the future is looking better all the time.
Governor McCrory, thank you for you for the leadership you are providing our great state.
Your letter will be sent directly to Governor McCrory.
Vivian C. says
We need voter Photo ID now. We have had too much fraud, and I want my vote to count.
Robert K. says
Lets make “Voter Fraud”, a thing of the past, for the individual’s doing this know who they are, bottom line, how about two (2) forms of photo ID!!
Karen N says
No reason we should not show ID. It is required almost everywhere else you go.
Don’t be intimated by liberals.
Doug says
It would be so discouraging to conservatives if the people we elected to put into action what we know is right, end up supporting what the progressive, loud minority wants. Democrats will be energized, and Occupy Monday will have succeeded. Pat, do the right thing!
Roy Carey says
I support the voter ID bill. I also believe this is a step forward to take out any doubts of voter fraud. Besides, most places you deal with will ask for you to show your ID to complete your business.
Larry Parker says
Thank You Governor for doing what we voted you into office to do. We need this law to stop voter Fraud. Keep dead people in the ground and out of North Carolina’s voting places. I was with you in this election and I will be there supporting you in the next election !
Frank Urben says
In the late 70s, my Mother was tired of being asked for her drivers license. She had none. So she went to the DMV and asked if she could have a picture ID. They gave her what looked like a license, but it said “for identification only” and it cost $6 as i recall. She was very proud of it.
As a military retiree, I want the precious right to vote protected. I signed the proverbial blank check for my life if necessary to guarantee the vote to all citizens. Their responsibility is to register and to study the issues and people being voted upon.
Joyce Freeman says
Gov. McCrory,
Don’t believe the liberals who say that photo ID is some hardship. Even seniors who don’t drive, now need to show photo ID to pick up their prescriptions pain medicine, open a bank account to have their SS deposited, or to cash a check to get that same money out. Let’s make the next election be the true vote of NC voters with little chance for fraud!
Marshall Clayton says
Very few people today when speaking about issues of any sort really say what is really on their mind. If a person can’t be honest about why they do not want voter I.D why should I expect them to be honest about anything else? There hidden are way too many agendas today. Honesty is a very rare trait today.
If a man won’t show his I.D. , what else does he have to hide, maybe we need to know.
c miller says
Of course we need voter ID….look at the last presidential election, 141% voted for Obama in FLA…..not really possible is it?
Alan says
The only possible reason to be against voter ID is that you want to cheat.
Ed says
Sign it now Governor! I’m getting tired of the deceased democrats resurrecting and casting votes at election time.
James Dilda says
It is the right thing to do.
Harold says
A common sense solution to voter fraud. If you can get a Social Security Card you can get a photo ID card.
John B. says
I am a senior citizen in my 80’s who supports Voter ID 100%. It is not true that voter Id will keep people from voting, so it is not hard to understand why the Media and a minority of others fight so hard to defeat it. If it does not occur (as opponents claim), why spend so much effort to fight it? DUH !
David B says
I have to show ID to purchase shotgun shells at Walmart and a peach margarita pouch at Target and I am 69. They won’t sell them to me without proving I am over 18 or 21, whichever is the case. Proof to vote is desired by all responsible people of all ages and races in North Carolina. The black people that vote in Granville county are angry that they cannot even show their ID much less be asked for it! And so are the whites! Get the race-baiters out of your office; tell them go to Chicago where they might be appreciated. We don’t want them or need them here in the Great state of North Carolina!
Darlene says
We need for you (who we elected) to start paying attention to us. Voter fraud DOES exist in NC, and photo ID might curtail it. I urge you to give a “yes” vote to photo ID.
Peter T says
As a new resident of NC coming from NY I’am all for voter ID. As every where I go in NC doctors, banks mv etc I have to show id so why not to vote. Also end early voting or if you have it at least do it after all the debates. GOD BLESS AMERICA
John says
Just to see Doc, cashing checks, using credit card at stores, and etc. requires PHOTO ID. So, what’s the problem? Only thing I can think of it that it is little harder for them to conduct “Voter Fraud.” What else can be? The Democrats are saying it is not fair/discriminating to the minorities. When I heard that it is insulting to minorities like me. What they are saying to me and alike, we are stupid to get a Photo ID, or show its ID to vote?
Donald Greaux says
We as Americans have to show ID for everything else in this country, like buying a pack of cigarettes or beer. We need voter ID to prevent fraud and the only people that are against it is the people that want fraud committed to further their cause.
Frank Livingston says
In this day and age it is impossible to get medicine, videos, get on a plane or anything without an ID so why not voting?
As Alan already said, “The only possible reason to be against voter ID is that you want to cheat.” Are we cheaters or not?
Michael Lysek says
The truth is coming out by liberal democrats when they use the “racial comments”. By that, it is because they feel everyone will bend to there way and they have no other meaning for debate Every time they say conservatives are doing something wrong, it is usually them that are doing. Voter ID will make it harder to cheat like liberal democrats do.
Alan W says
I want everyone who has a legitimate right to vote to have only 1 vote. Without voter ID requirements, there is protection against fraudulent votes. We have to have ID to drive a car or fly in this country to identify who we are, why should voting be any
different?
there are very few people who don’t have a birth certificate and can’t get an ID. I’m sure a process can be figured out to handle thoses situations on an exception basis.
Jeffrey Long says
We are long overdue in requiring voter IDs at polling places. If amnesty is ever granted 20 million illegal aliens, can you imagine how this will add to the fraud problems we ALREADY have?!
Michael says
As free people our most treasured Right is not guarded, that is the Right to vote. However the liberals require an ID to buy a beer and cigarettes.
Where is the logic in that?
Chris says
Let’s STOP the Voter Fraud as much as possible in NC. Please sign this bill to get a handle on the overreach of Voter Fraud which help elect the Democrat candidates. Also let’s purge the Dead Voters from the databases – this should have been done right along & the dead voters would NOT be showing up in every election also voters that are 120 years old and vote in every election. How do you explain this fraud?
Virginia C says
Government photo ID should be required to vote. Please sign the law. Low cost legitimate IDs are available now.
Dover says
It is amazing that this is even questioned. Voting goes without saying. But ensuring one vote per citizen via I.D. is just as important and seems to me; obvious.
Jay G says
Voter ID is a no brainer. IF there are actually people for whom an ID is a hardship, which I doubt exist, then the state Could say we will help you get an Id. Show us your valid documentation and we will take your picture and get you an ID. No more excuses of hardship. How many people in the state can possibly not have an ID.
You need a checking account now to have your social security money directly deposited. Banks require a picture Id to get a Checking account. So who is actually at hardship?
frontpaige says
The majority of states in the U.S., including both our neighbors Virginia & South Carolina, require voter idea to cast a vote. Why should we not be allowed this same commonsense safeguard?
frontpaige says
The majority of states in the U.S., including both our neighbors Virginia & South Carolina, require voter ID to cast a vote. Why should we not be allowed this same commonsense safeguard?
Jerry D. says
It is only the Liberals/Democrats and minorities who don’t want this. Why? So they can rig the elections like they did for Obama in 2008 and 12. No other reason. The Republican majority was elected by the people to support this bill amongst others and we will not let groups like the ACLU and NAACP tell us what to do or what is best for us.
Tom H. says
I know two people, one in Durham and one in Chapel Hill, who went to vote and someone had already used their name and “voted” for them.
All this within the past five years.
Rebecca says
If you look at the NCSL (National Council of State Regulators) website, you will see that NC is one of about a 1/3 of the states that have no voter ID requirements. The rest of the states have to show some proof of who they are to vote. IT is ridiculous to paint this law as anything other than what it is – non discriminatory verification that you are who you say you are in order to take part in a process that should be carried out with integrity.
Ellene B says
If the governor does not sign this bill, the Republicans have messed up one more time and supported a weakling who stands for nothing. I was a reluctant supporter to begin with. Big government go along to get along. Does he have an opinion about anything? Except government partnership for windfarms off the coast? I’m not happy.
stephen f says
We need to show id everywhere…the airport, at school, in hospitals, to use credit cards at retail establishments, to apply for absolutely anything, at the library. It is an expected and very minor inconvenience that is part of almost ever aspect of our lives. Voter fraud is dangerous to our very freedom. We NEED voter ID in place to protect our votes and our freedoms.
earl b says
let’s face the truth . you have to show photo id to go to the Dr.’s office. and if you don’t have some form of photo id you can’t get anything in today’s world. as far as collage students go you should vote where your home is not where your school is that’s why we have absentee ballots
Anne D. says
I see in today’s news that we taxpayers are providing hotel rooms and services to thousands of illegals from Mexico (supposedly) who are saying that they are afraid of the drug cartels. What’s to keep them from signing up for more benefits and voting? What can I get if I say I’m afraid of voter fraud?
Dr. Bruce V Wainright says
It’s hard for me to imagine why voter ID has not been a requirement before now. It just makes good sense!
David R says
We must show photo IDs for cashing checks, show drivers license with photo to drive a vehicle in NC, proof of age, the list goes on for the requirements of a photo ID.
Voting should be no different in proving who we are. The photo ID is the only manner to curb voter fraud.
Teresa O. says
Let’s make this happen and show we mean business.
Ken B. says
Too many other states that have adopted measures that enhance voting security, e.g. voter ID, have recorded increased voter participation and enhanced confidence in the integrity of the vote. That is what this is all about, and will be here in NC
Patricia Dystant says
Why aren’t these same people screaming about pictures on their drivers license? If they are driving, they have photo ID. I suspect people wanting to vote already have photo ID and if they don’t it has already been stated they can receive the photo ID for free. How then can they keep making these ridiculous claims that this is to suppress their vote? I show my ID to cash a check in grocery stores so why shouldn’t we show ID to do something as important and consequential as vote?
Bobby P says
I have served in predominately black precincts over the last 2 elections as a judge and as an observer. Working as a judge, I truly saw the NEED of voter ID. This would make our voting process so much smoother and eliminate the fraud. Please sign NOW!
Robert Morgan says
Lack of Photo I.D. smells like deliberate effort to defraud the voting process. You need it for most everything. LET’S MAKE IT AS FOOL-PROOF AS WE CAN. OTHERWISE WE’RE THE FOOLS.
Robert L. Morgan
S. Thomas says
I had to show ID the other day to get a children’s cough medicine. Is voting so less important?
Phyllis Gibbs says
Now we need to show ID to purchase some nail polish remover! How will those people who claim they can’t get ID to vote be able to purchase nail polish remover?
Lori says
Obama thinks Kenyans should have voter ID laws but frowns on voter ID laws within the USA. What’s up with that? We need voter ID to be sure it is the American people who elect our leaders, not foreigners!
Bonnie Pearson says
My 80 yr. old Mother who had NEVER had a Driver’s License got an ID in Va. at the DMV office with no trouble at all. She just had to show a couple of other forms of ID.
Willa Adcock says
You can’t even buy a card at Hallmark without showing your ID card. Why should one of the most imo9irtant things we do be otherwise?
Judy G. says
It seems to be almost impossible to be an honest government leader today. However, nothing worth fighting for EVER comes easy. Gov. McCrory please do NOT give in to pressure from any group who pressures you to do what is MORALLY, ETHICALLY, POLITICALLY WRONG!!! We voted you in knowing your road would be difficult, but believing what you told us you would do. Please, please, please, do not let anything keep you from doing what is right and just for this state. And please do not add to your or your staff’s ‘coffers’ at the expense of those of us who have worked over 40 years in the right way to be honorable citizens. We are not getting raises because of the economy and no one who works in government should be either. We ALL must be willing to tighten our belts until you get our state back in a great economic position. This is the ONLY way to cause your opponents to come over to your side…by proving beyond a doubt that you are willing to sacrafice the same thing we are. God bless us all.
Marilyn Flowers says
We desperately need the voter ID law signed and protected from an activist judge. Trying to have an honest voting system is a must for the benefit of our NC citizens. Gov. McCrory PLEASE sign the law.
BillyH. says
we have to show id for everything else. PASS the bill we need it in NC and the rest of the country
Colleen rehak says
We need voter ID, we had it before Gov Purdue got in office. She changed the law. Thank you.
Sarah says
People jump through hoops for a SNAP card and a Voter ID should be mandatory. Too much fraud in all of government and the land.
Steve S says
I fail to understand how this legislation restricts some from exercising their voting rights as reported in the liberal press. Everyone has access to free ID, and ID is needed for everything from flying to seeking medical treatment. I support Voter ID requirements!
davidstallings says
One of the scariest things I heard was not about individual voter fraud but the fraud that went on AFTER the polls had closed. Poll workers already knew who had not voted, it is just a simple matter of voting for them. There needs to be a representative from both parties at every polling place.
Ivesmaria says
Was 28 years ago when I arrive to the USA, beautiful country back then…..no matters where you are going overseas, you must have ID with you, why not up here? Thank you, Governor McCrory for making a reality on this issue. Do not let liberals intimidate you in any form. Next step, Matricula consular should not be a document of any form except for the nationals of that country that they are from. The same way I did when I arrive, did my papers thru my husband that is from this State. Undocumented people should do, follow the law the right way. Not in a arrogant way.
May our Lord Jesus bless this beautiful State!
Joel says
Thank you so very much governor McCrory. Keep on preaching brother, I’ll turn the page.
Ron Kirkpatrick says
Thank You
We Stand with you!
Not (sense) Ronald Reagan
have I supported any politician and the difference is I see you as a LEADER not a political puppet.
Stand Strong My Friend….
Patricia B says
get new software in all tabulators. they are tampered with by dems millions of votes were stolen by obummer thieves.. all states need audits and new tech teams. dems are voter thieves and thugs and totally corrupt and immoral and lying and cheating and etc etc.
Darlene Schadt says
I agree with Alan, the only reason to oppose voter ID is if you are encouraging fraud
J. Engle says
Great bill, but would like to see it begin in time for the 2014 mid-term elections!!!
toogoo says
Thanks much to Gov. McCrory for having the bravery to “buck” the system. I’m sure the progressives and the media will come at you from all sides trying to discredit your great work. We are glad we supported you = continue your good work for the citizens of North Carolina who believe in the Constitution. Tony & Jan
Joe Smith says
Your Attorney General is a jerk.
Gina says
I just have to laugh at those crying about this. What is wrong with proving who you are, Hillary. It’s not voter suppression, it’s voter fraud suppression. Fight on Gov. we stand with you, not the noise.
Jame says
I’m 19, So the 2012 election was the first time I have ever voted. I voted for Pat then, and I’ll vote for him again!
Steve Magness says
Eric Holder should have a picture ID in his pocket if he ever comes to NC, so we won’t mistake him for the thug that he is.
Brendan A. says
Voter ID is a no-brainer.
Jay G says
Thank you Pat for having the courage to stand up to ensure legal voters are the only NC voters to get to cast a vote here.
There is nothing about race or disenfranchisement in proving who you are.
Pat we are with you.
James A. says
Awesome! Finally a Governor who is trying to help our great state. Thank you sir!
David L. says
Why would anyone have objection to honesty? Unless they had other motives.
Mary McCandless says
My mother has worked the polls for years. As a Republican working under Democrats at the polls, she saw a lot of voter fraud that was never followed up on. Things like a person coming in to vote and finding out that someone else voted their ballot in early voting. With the Democrats controlling the Board of Elections, the public never heard about this. That is why the complaint that there is no voter fraud to fix is bogus.
Isabelle Myers says
I believe the last election was crooked , with this reform maybe in the future my vote will actually count God bless you Governor.
Douglas R. says
I agree with the Governor, these are commonsense enhancements to the system.
Greg Lovejoy says
WOW I never thought it would happen. You know that the Dems are counting on all of those votes.
Eileen says
Thank you Governor McCrory for making voting honest.
chris says
I am 58 years old and was born and raised in North Carolina. We need identification for everything we do here. I think required I.D. should be implemented without delay! For every vote that is cast unlawfully, a lawful vote is squandered. That should bother people from either the left or the right. If the idea that poor people will have a difficult time obtaining proper identification at the NCDMV before the election, simply put voting registry sites in every Walmart in the State of North Carolina. There does not seem to be a problem for them to find transportation to Wally World to spend their free coupons supplied by the tax payers of this state!
Dale says
I don’t know why they think this will disenfranchise minority voters. That is requiring a voter to show ID. They are readily available to anyone. Just go to your local DMV office and get one.
Mary Brown says
Keep up the good work you are doing; So tired of voter fraud.
Mark barker says
Only People committing Voter Fraud are against a Bill to Stop Voter Fraud.Liberal/Progressive/Marxist/Communists will say it’s to stop them from voting!I say NO It’s only to stop them from Voting TWICE!
Richard Robbins says
Having been an elections judge in a precinct for 4 years I saw first hand attempts at cheating the system. We actually stopped people from Winton Salem, Gastonia, etc from voting in Mecklenburg County. With voter ID they would not have attempted to do that. The question is, how many slipped through?
Richard Morgan says
Thanks, Governor, for cracking down on voter abuse & fraud. Having personally observed a “MoveOn.org” poll worker in High Point show a voter where to select Obama’s name on the 2008 ballot (which got me extremely upset!), this is a great start. If you can’t read the ballot, you have no business voting.
State IDs can be gotten for free, so the poor or non-drivers have no excuse. If people have to show an ID to get food from my church’s food pantry, then they darn sure should have an ID to vote. Enough with “the rules don’t apply to me” crowd!
Dody says
Great work – you need better PR people, though to cut through the liberal awfulness.
Patricia G. says
Every state should have voter ID. If every date made it as easy as NC does to get a *free* government-issued photo ID, and every polling place enforced ID requirements, we would eliminate voter fraud. When the Democrats say there is “no fraud,” they’re misrepresenting the situation.
Bill H says
My wife and I witnessed voter fraud in 2008. Wish I would have had a camera. I don’t hear liberals complaining about places where photo IDs are required like motels, car rental, college classes or air travel.
Robert R. says
We must have voter ID in order to have faith in our democracy. Now we must bend over backwards in NC(as was done in SC) to make sure that every legitimate voter can obtain a voter iD so there will be no valid arguments against it.
patricia gabriel says
Prevent Shiriah law in NC. The Muslims are taking over our country.
Thank you.
Jon T, says
Voter ID is common sense. The rest of it is dirty tricks. We Republicans have the right ideas. Now the democrat party is going to distract the indecisive independents with nonsense. We just made a useless mistake.
The democrats would lose on their own. No need to help them.
Sonja says
Good choice. One can look to GA’s voter ID law and see a positive outcome!!
Ronald T says
Great job Governor! We also need to focus on eliminating early cheating….I mean early voting. If we allow the Dems to cheat at the polls we are nothing more than another Banana Republic
Phyllis says
Thank you Governor McCrory for for making changes that will help North Carolina become the great state it use to be. Thank you for the Voter ID law! Keep up the great work!
Dennis D says
If this all you got passed, I would be happy, keep up the good work and lets take this country back. Viet Nam Vet.
We need to do more!!!!
John says
I am 100% for voter ID cards.
I so tired of hearing those whining liberals at the N@R, I stopped purchasing it.
Kay says
Thank you, Governor.
Jesse Flanders says
We need Voter ID . We have nothing to hide.
Jim says
Now do away with the mandatory smog inspection for new cars. Hell, even California exempts new cars for 5 years from smogs. What a racket the Dems laid on us.
Cynthia says
Of course we need voter ID. Adults need an ID to buy alcoholic beverages, so why not to vote.
fred brown says
You are doing great job and we are supporting you.
kb says
I bought some baby clothes at a consignment sale last weekend, and had to show my ID in order to use my debit card. What is the big deal about a voter ID??? People have two years to get their ID, and can’t it even be done through the mail??? Thank you, Gov. Pat, from a NC voter who thinks you are doing a great job. I did vote for you.
Donny T. says
Great for Gov. McCrory. Lets don’t have NC be a banana republic like the US itself with people voting for Obama 70 times and stealing elections that the dems are so great at because people will not votw for their liberal policies so they use voter fraud. Keep up the good work Pat you were a great mayor and are going to be a great governor. Thanks 4 keeping the sanity.
Jack Dunne says
A very good start with requiring voter ID. Now let’s see something get done about absentee ballots, as these ballots are where there have been historic instances of abuse and fraud!
Keith Porter says
Governor must cut all spending going forward. He must start with his staff. Recent announcement of 24 year old staff members heading departments with large staffs and huge budgets show questionable judgment.
Cherie' R. Pickett says
I am from California and Hawaii and when I lived there we had to show ID.. today I do not know if they require that. But it bothered me that anyone could go vote without ID and say they are “me” and vote in my place. Voter ID is needed and it is required for just about everything else…so it should be for voting as well…
Jerry M. says
Great time in North Carolina! Hope the midas touch that Governor McCrory had as Mayor of Charlotte will be even greater for him now that he is a governor, and has wasted no time in getting the voter ID requirements in motion. I always said those who were against voter ID, were for voter fraud. What a great way to thwart votes of the dead, illegals, and the whinning sluggards who can’t get off their behinds to get an ID, now while there is plenty of time and I’m sure public freebees to do so….
Shawna R. says
Why haven’t we always had voter ID? What a privilege to vote, only those eligible should be able to determine the outcome of our elections. Poor liberals, the law just doesn’t seem to apply to them. It’s a great day for North Carolina, to be out from under the thumb of the liberal left. Thanks for doing the RIGHT thing, Gov. McCrory. Keep up the good work…let’s get all the corruption cleaned out of our state and local government.
Jane says
Please make sure your reps vote to sustain Governor McCrory’s veto on HB 786 and HB 392. The GA is assembling on 9/2-3 for such a vote. We need to act now. Thanks.
